January 2021 Club Meeting

Manatees and Mermaids

Did you know Christopher Columbus mistook manatees for mermaids?

Maybe he was at sea too long, but according to a ship log dated January 9, 1493, Christopher Columbus himself said that he “distinctly saw three mermaids, which rose well out of the sea; but they are not so beautiful as they are said to be, for their faces had some masculine traits.” The reason they weren’t as beautiful as he might have imagined is because they were actually manatees.

Manatees are large, slow moving mammals, and just like humans they don’t like to get too cold! Each winter they find their way into warm water tributaries and as a result places like Crystal River, Florida, see huge numbers of manatees each season.

Join us as Mike Engiles introduces us to manatee biology, physiology, and habitat, and learn how friendly, intelligent and engaging manatees can be.

Meet your fellow SeaDevils at Three Notch’d Craft Kitchen & Brewery, located in IX Art Park (520 2nd St SE, Charlottesville). We will continue offering remote access to the meeting as well. To join, all you need is a computer or mobile phone. It’s sure to be a night full of food, drink and fun. Hope to see you there!
